We expect results any minute now from Amazon as well as many, many others that we might discuss now, including the two biggest rivals to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google.

Much of the worry surrounding this report was for Amazon Web Service, which is in a price war with competing cloud-computing services. Most would say that Amazon should be judged more on a price-to-revenue basis, because it foregoes near-term profitability to build for the future by spending wildly. This is two gigantic businesses in one, one of which has high sales but small margins, the other with strong margins but smaller revenue totals that are growing much faster. In other words, if AWS was a solo tech startup right now, it would have to be more highly valued than Uber, the largest of the unicorns.

If overseas biz manages to equal or surpass domestic, that will be huge. During the quarter, AWS rolled out a number of new features, such as Amazon Connect and Amazon Chime.

It also announced partnerships with third-party companies, which will now offer services through those AWS features. For example, Twilio expanded its partnership with AWS last month to include mobile phone and voice messages that AWS clients can now use to reach out to customers.

That plan of action is why, all of a sudden, Amazon is fresh enemies with one of the biggest players in enterprise software, Oracle. As expected, Amazon did not break out Prime numbers. It also has been doubling down on hardware, such as the Echo and Dash buttons, that utilize its customer data and Alexa AI engine to keep customers in its ecosystem and have them buy more product through its marketplace.

It would be really nice if I could compare AWS results to its core competitors, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform, but neither of those other companies breaks out raw cloud computing money lesson 2nd grade independently.
